I have been filling in various gaps in the online archive of my mother, Dinah Murray's work - notably including the first ever publication about #monotropism, her 1992 Durham paper 'Attention Tunnelling and #Autism'.
I think these papers hold up pretty well, all things considered!

It covers many of the most common errors I’ve seen (or that I’ve _done_) and some suggestions on how to address them. I hope it’s helpful, and feel free to share your tips on what else could be included.

Opposing genocide isn’t antisemitic.
Saying that opposing genocide is antisemitic is antisemitic.
You know what’s inhumane? Genocide. You know who’s committing genocide? Israel.
You have zero moral standing to assess me. Those who commit and are complicit in genocide never do.
So yes, most definitely, goodbye.

Well - I hope you enjoy the read!

The scene is set against a dramatic backdrop of the sky, with clouds gracefully floating above. The landscape is a rich tapestry of nature's colors, featuring varying shades of greens from the trees and grasses, contrasted against the rugged, grey tones of the mountain peaks. Some areas of the mountains suggest they could be kissed by snow or bathed in sunlight, adding to t…

These words were written by an Ohioan adult industry veteran in a recent op/ed about Ohio's attempt to pass an age verification law for accessing potentially adult sites.
"As someone who champions ethical sexual education and exploration, I am dismayed at the attempt to use preventing minor access to adult material as a bait-and-switch tactic for a loss of privacy."

About life and feelings, gloomy and private
The feelings we get from the activities we do could be classified as neutral, positive and negative.
Let's take developing #Gentoo as an example. It's something that makes me happy — but you can't (or at least I can't) just get the happiness and reject everything else. Most of the Gentoo work is basically neutral, even bland — a duty that takes a lot of time and effort, and probably a little of your health. It's statistically probable that you're going to get some positive feelings out of it — the joy of success, satisfaction, appreciation, awareness that you've done something good. But you also get negative feelings — from failures, frustration, negative interactions.
My hiking trips are like that too. My family believes that "I do it for pleasure" — but it's a harmful oversimplification and it only tells me that they even aren't trying to understand me. In fact, it's mostly a necessity, a way of solving specific problems that works for me — halting diabetes-related problems, coping with emotions. Of course there's a positive side to it — good mood, energy to survive another day, something the joy of visiting a new place, seeing something beautiful, finding a solution to a vexatious problem, positive interactions with people. But there are also negative feelings — anger and sadness from failure, stress from problems, negative contacts with people. Sometimes you end up slowly charging your social battery for a whole week, just to have one person destroy it all.
If you think about it, life's something like that. It's mostly a bland effort to survive every following day, sometimes interspersed with positive or negative moments.

Content warning: Conversion therapy, homophobia, transphobia

I wrote to the UK Council for Psychotherapy after they withdrew from the Coalition Against Conversion Therapy... [1/2]

I am writing to you with extreme concern about UKCP’s decision to pull out of the Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy and the Coalition Against Conversion Therapy.
As a lesbian who has been offered conversion therapy twice, once by a psychiatrist, once by a church leader, it was profoundly damaging to even have these authorities suggest I should do it.
I didn’t go ahead with it – either time – but others are less lucky than me in that respect and are even more harmed than I was.
And believe me, I was harmed by the offers.
We live in a homophobic and transphobic world and those of us who are LGBTQIA+ are left in no doubt that the world wants us to be straight, to be cisgender. Sometimes we submit to that pressure and people damage us further because we are so desperate to fit in. So desperate to be seen to be acceptable.
It is vital that we are protected from this, whether as children or adults, by joining the 27 countries that have outlawed anti-LGBTQI+ conversion therapy. For an organisation like UKCP that has such authority, an organisation that is clearly made up of stakeholders in this discussion, to back out of their commitment to oppose it, is crushing.
More to the point, it’s creating an atmosphere where queer people feel less able to seek help because they do not trust that the professional body for ps…
We already live in a world where LGBTQI+ people are not safe. This is indisputable.
What UKCP has done is make the world even less safe for us than it was a few days ago. And those who might really benefit from the help of your members now have even less faith in the reliability and the trustworthiness of your registered clinicians.
Will we get a therapist who wants to counsel us straight, or wants to counsel us cis, if we get a UKCP-registered therapist? Will those therapists now feel like U…

This is distressing: TIL #Mozilla #Firefox is not the honest broker of webpages I was led to believe, but actively CENSORS content, hiding its bias behind bogus 'error' messages. This is a deal-breaker for Firefox for my use, which makes me very sad because I do like a lot of it, and every indicator says Chrome is about to go double-evil.
I joke about how someday your AI may stop working with you because of how you voted in the last election. We needn't wait for AI, the future is here today.

Content warning: USPol, Anti-Trans Bills in Ohio

I can’t stop thinking about this new bill working its way through the Ohio lawmakers.
It’s always about “think of the children” yet now it’s also “oh and we will attack adults too”. Going after the school bathrooms is bad enough, but these paragraphs show the true intent of these lawmakers. Make life hell for all trans people.

Who here will be tuning into Google I/O 2024 today at 1pm EST?
If so, what are you hoping to see or hear them talk about or announce?
For me, I'm only interested in the Android 15 related stuff and not much else. Especially not interested in AI/Gemini stuff in any way at all.

Reporter Sarah D. Wire’s first-person account of the U.S. Capitol riot had me reliving the terror, disbelief and disgust that many Americans experienced on Jan. 6, 2021.
I say “many” because — impossible as it sounds — a large number of this country’s citizens do not believe what took place was an actual coup-driven attack on the seat of our nation’s democracy.
Meanwhile, a few pages away in a photo appearing in the same day’s newspaper, there he sits, the man responsible, as i…

So Casio fans, there is often talk about how module 593's major failing is its backlight. And yes, it is pretty weak and uneven. I too have thrown shade at it and yet, if I am totally honest I don't recall ever having struggled to read it in real life.
While in photos it often comes out looking totally unreadable, I find that with the naked eye (in the dark at night), I have always read the entire display just fine.
Is this just me?

Telekom is ringing doorbells trying to sell optic fiber again. I'm all for upgrading my internet but their prices are ludicrous and why the h*ck do they want me to sign contracts at the door without talking about pricing first?
(2 minutes of duckduckgoing later)
Oh, it's because they have 17 different prices and as someone who's already a customer, I'll pay TWICE as much as someone who'd switch to them would.

Me: two days ago wearing shorts, sandals, using lake water to cool myself down and complaining about the heat.
Also me: wearing winter cap, gloves and complaining about the cold. Though admittedly, I'm wearing just a thin jacket over a T-shirt, and carrying shorts just in case.
Me as well: back in middle school, wearing just a short-sleeved shirt when it was above zero centigrade, till I was nicknamed "the Eskimo". It had a downside though — I used to immediately become sleepy in a heated classroom.

Soooo....I'm doing a thing...🤭😏
As a lot of you know, Tooters shut down recently and the way it was handled in the end is regrettable.
However, I felt for longest time while it was up, that it was consistently one of the BEST run instances on Fedi with how they protected their users from some of the insanity that happens here.
That being said, with Tooters being gone, it leaves a bit of a hole in my Fedi heart and I know a lot of others as well.
So, I'm creating a new, very limited for now, politically-light (as little politics as possible locally), AI friendly (AI art welcome), Sharkey instance for some folks within my circle that I've grown to consider my friends.
The Social Zone is meant to be a place to escape the very political society we currently all live in and just be social with one another about our hobbies, interests, and day to day lives.
I'm still working out all the details but when I launch it, it's going to be invite only because I'm new to something like this and I want to get it right. Especially because those I will invite are people that are close to me and I don't want to disappoint them.
Depending on how things go for the next few months, including if I can even get this thing started correctly, I MIGHT be open to allowing more members in, down the line.
But, this is just getting started. I registered the domain yesterday and just started researching Sharkey today and how hard it would be to spin something up. Then, of course, there's configuration settings and administration with Sharkey that I have to familiarize myself with.
All in all, I'm very nervous, but excited that I decided to take this next step in my Fedi adventure and hope to eventually "give back" to the entire community, the same positive energy that you've all given me over the past wonderful year of being on this amazing platform.
Please do not ask for invites. I will not be handing them out anytime soon. I've already asked about 5 of you along with some IRL folks and I feel I would like some time to get this right for them first.
Thanks for reading. I hope you understand why I'm choosing to do this and hope you're as excited as me to see where things can go and understand why I feel it's important to have these types of "politically-light" spaces so people can escape such topics from time to time.
Keep on keeping on, Fedi. The future is bright and I'm ready to learn along with you. More info about TheSocial.Zone coming soon!
Your friend,
B.A.

Does anyone know of an email service, add-on or tutorial that allows for mimicing the one feature that intrigues me about HEY e-mail: opt-in for receiving emails from someone.

i.e. the default would be that someone who is not yet an approved sender ends up in a separate inbox where I have to confirm if I want to keep receiving email from them or not. I think HEY calls this ’the screener’.

It's sometimes good to remember that many people have been debunking several
of Nielsen's assertions about usability for more than two decades. Not least the one about only needing to test with five users.

Here's a good study from 2001 (yes, 23 years ago) about page load times. By Christine Perfetti and Lori Landesman.

Remember when Amazon took 36 seconds to load over a 56kbps modem?
